‘Homemaking as Resistance’

Blooming Freedom in Heritage Foods, A Spring Equinox Brunch, March 2023

Homemaking is a craft, an art, a resistance to dehumanization, love enacted, holistic medicine, and work. I guided participants through a hands-on four course brunch that includes an exploration of locally grown Spring crops/ingredients, collective preparation of ingredients into a Gullah-inspired meal, and creating constellation maps of relationships and places that create our homes. We will taste, smell, touch, & eat foodways rooted in Africa and meditate on how tradition, displacement, migration, improvisation, adaptation give way to homemaking (in spite of place). While we ate, we fellowshiped on how critical relationships create experiences and spaces of joyful liberation. Set in the idyllic Garden House at Life Wellness Center in Brooklyn, NY, this sensory exploration sought to nourish and (re)connect participants to the freedom that lies within.
